What’s with the Octopii?

You know I’ve developed a love-hate relationship with hockey. Remember my initial attempt (see One Girl’s Guide) to become a fan?

If the Red Wings- Penguins game wasn’t the most exciting game you’ve ever watched – it has to be at least in your top ten. If you stayed up, that is. If you even knew it was happening. Which probably means I’m speaking to a handful of folks outside of Pennsylvania and Michigan.

The more experienced Red Wings were 35 seconds away from the Stanley Cup and couldn’t close the deal. They have experience. They have bench depth. They should have the Stanley Cup.

The Penguins are so young, half their starters couldn’t even buy a round for the team in a public bar. I assume and hope someone took care of that for them. But really, if your top guys are 19 and 20 years old, and only four players have scored in finals…should you have won? The goalie is only 23 and the Red Wings had twice as many shots on goal.

Thinking about the next game you’ve got to think that the inability to close it out is a huge disadvantage for the Red Wings. That and the fact they’re from Detroit.

Then there’s the youth vs. experience thing. Most often, I’ll go with experience. So what happened last night?

And, can someone explain the “tradition” of throwing octopii on the ice?
